Hips don't lie, check me out-Mercy Johnson
Mercy Johnson the second runner-up at recently adjudged sexiest female in Nolly wood was our guest on a day she chose to pick up her prize, a 32'’ LCD. Clad in a tight fitting black skirt, a white top and a matching D& G hand bag, she literally brought activities in the company to a halt.
With smiles powerful enough to awaken even a blind man and carriage good enough to steal the soul

of even the devil himself, Mercy really showed that her choice by Nigerians as the third sexiest woman in Nollywood was no fluke.
Apart from sharing an interesting  moment with the  Saturday Vanguard team, the sultry lady from Kogi State spoke to us. We also bring for your delight, some of the memorable photographs as captured by the sharp lenses of our cameras. Enjoy;   You were not present on the D day, what happened?I traveled to Europe for a  movie cum  close  meeting with my fans for two months. I travelled around nine countries which include Germany, Belgium, Greece, Italy, France, Spain and others.Who was in charge of that?Isaac... , he’s been there for about eight years, so he’s well known there. It was an opportunity to get closer to my fans, sign autographs for them and answer questions that have been bothering them. How was this all organised? The person in charge has a website where fans vote for the artiste they want to meet. So if you are on high demand, he’ll organise for you to meet with them.Which people did the voting?Africans voted, but the whites voted more. Blacks who were married to white people brought their partners, it was fun all the way. Sometimes I hear them say ‘Mercy Johnson’ correct girl and things like that.On arrival, how were you received?Arrival was great, a lot of  fans came to receive us and it was covered by a TV station in Berlin owned by a Nigerian. We were taken to various places to hang out and take some drinks. It was grand and awesome. What was the most memorable thing you experienced over there? In Nigeria so many things are overlooked  but  abroad I found out that people appreciate celebrities more. At a point I started crying because of the kind of reception we got, some fans even broke into tears. At that point I said to  myself  that I’m never going to do anything illegal and I’ll do my job better than ever. I would be good because I never want to disappoint all these people who appreciate me so much. I can tell you the experience was great and awesome. What did you benefit from that trip?Lots of things because the organiser is a great man. I say this because he didn’t just bring us there to have fun alone, he also put together some thing like a workshop for us to learn. We also had to do movie with one of their Berlin artistes, Mr Haggin who is popular there. The man was surprised that we were able to pick our lines that same day because he’s had the script for about a month. It was also awesome because over there, their artistes usually go to artiste school which I didn’t attend. So it was more like exchanging ideas and personally I learnt something new What do they think about Nollywood? They think it’s got wide entertainment opportunity, they think we’ve not even started and we are doing so well. They see Nollywood as a system that’s been able to compete with their foreign counterparts despite sophisticated machines and manpower they use over there. In  fact, they see Nollywood as a
Image
Mercy Johnson
working progress. What are those things you noticed they do perfectly well which we’ve not even started doing here?Costuming. They costume base on your colour and environment. In Nollywood, it’s difficult to see two artiste wear white upon white, they’ll complain about lighting. But they think it is a minute thing to think of. They seem to have more time for production than we do. In Nollywood, a particular person can do 10 movies in a month and when they’ll come out  not  very interesting. No matter how awesome you may have done it, you’ll find out that you could have done better if you had enough time to rest.

How do you think your fans should address you?

Just Mercy. A lot of them say something like ‘hips don’t lie.’What’s the meaning of that? They say the hip is beautiful, loud and nice. And what do you think?ImageI’m just normal and gifted like every other person, nothing special. When did you notice this hip thing?Three years ago. That was when people started shouting Wao! See her hip and stomach. Honestly, before then, I didn’t see it as anything, it didn’t count and I carry myself like any other normal person.Who discovered  you into Nollywood?I was discovered by Kenneth Nnebue of NEK Video link. What did you do for NEK?I starred in one of his movies and when that movie came out it was an instant hit for me.
Some of your fans argue that you overact in movies.Yes I agree. I don’t frown at those arguments because the best way for me to learn is when they pick out the things I’m not doing well. After that,  I’ll go back and look at my mistakes and correct them. Do you kiss in movies?Yes, I do. I feel terrible when I watch my movies and see where I’m supposed to kiss and I didn’t do it well. For me, acting is a flare, I wasn’t educated to act. I don’t like to fool my fans because I am being cautious of whom I’m kissing in movies. It’s all about the job and it doesn’t matter who I kiss. What matters is that I do my job very well.

I’m ready to die an actress — Oby Edozien
Beauty combined with versatility, that is how to best describe pretty Oby Edozien the actress who made her first incursion into Nollywood in 1997.   Since her first movie ‘To love and cherish’, Oby has starred in several other  movies which today
Image
Oby Edozien
has placed her on the rung as one of the most sought after actress..  She spoke to Aramide Pius on her career, growing up and her new found love life; Jesus.
Enjoy it.
How is the acting career treating you?It is all well and good, we thank God.And what about music?(Laughs) Ah, I have not really gone into full time music. What I did was only a sound track of my movie. My music career has not started yet. Since the movie has sparked up the musical talent in you, are you moving any further in music?Yes I will. I am traveling tomorrow and probably when I get back, I will probably produce another movie and then I will also sing.

What kind of music did you play?

It was R&B and that’s how it will remain for now. What actually sparked up the music interest or is it a childhood passion? Not really. The movie actually sparked that passion.

Can you give a synopsis of the movie? The movie is the story of three girls trying to make it in their musical career. They went through hell and at the end of the day, they succeeded. But along the line, fame got into their heads and they engaged in lesbianism and all sorts of indecent behaviour.  The movie has several party scenes and has musicals in between.  At the end of the story the girls died in a plane crash.  I survived. because I didn’t go with them. After that, the producer refused to open the studio again and I moved on with my life. That song you hear on the radio stations is contained in the movie. After the movie debuted,  I decided to package the song and play it on air.

So it was actually the movie that gave birth to the musical career for you?

Yes it is.So how do you think you will survive the competition in the Nigeria music industry today? In music or acting, you don’t have to compete with anybody.  I can never be them and they can never be Oby Edozien so there is no competition. It is all about moving ahead in life and making it and being yourself.  You don’t have to look at another person and say this person is this and so you have to be that.  You just have to be yourself and you don’t have to be jealous of anybody.  So how has the acting terrain been, has it been fun?Acting has been fun and it’s what I will do till the last days. So I am ready to act till old age. I am ready to die an actress.Going down memory lane, how did you get into the acting profession? In my school, Sola Fosudo was a lecturer; I walked up to him one day and told him I will like to be an actress and asked him how to go about it.  He now explained to me that there is something called

audition and he gave me a note to Zeb Ejiro and I went to Zeb Ejiro’s office.  Then, they wanted to start ‘Candle Light’, so he invited me for the audition. You know in those days when  you go for auditions, you’ll see the whole Lagos there.  I met some other people there and that was how it all started and the rest is history today.Which was your very first movie? My very first movie was ‘To love and to cherish’.Was it a lead role you played? It was a lead role and in that movie I was Keppy Ekpeyong’s wife. You may probably not know I was the one. He used to beat me and all that and I took him to court. Aren’t you lucky, getting a lead role the first time?Yes I was and the film was directed by Mathias Obidikwe. It was produced by Keppy and Mathias Obidikwe. It was a lovely story.

Ini Edo
Though controversies have trailed this union almost from inception, the lovers remained glued together, not minding all the scandals that have followed them about.Ini, months ago, denied making any marriage plans even when it was an open secret that wedding bells would soon ring. She once told Life and Beat that, “I don’t know where this rumour is coming from. Those that said I am getting married would probably drag me to the altar and bring the man for me to marry him.”

Anyway, critics claim that Ini has been the one raising the confusion concerning her marriage so as to remain in the news.

Don’t forget that her soon-to-be husband, Philip, was involved in a controversy with actors, Jim Iyke and Emeka Ike over who was sleeping with his ex wife, Ruth. Also, comedian, AY, has finally decided to do the right thing by wedding his baby’s mama, Mabel.Life and Beat gathered that the comedian wants to ensure that no stone is left unturned for his big day.

'Homosexualism is the biggest virus in Nollywood'......John Okafor...
Click for Full Size

When http://nigeriafilms.com asked for an interview from John Okafor, unarguably one of the most- sought-after actors in Nollywood, he happily obliged. But on the day of the appointment, Okafor who is fondly called Mr. Ibu (the name he bore in a succesful comedy movie he appeared in) fixed the meeting point at a Mr. Biggs Restaurant located at Aguda, Surulere.

The Source arrived first; but we didn't have to wait for too long that afternoon before he walked in with his manager and costumier. Remarkably, heads started turning upon his entrance and within minutes, everyone became aware of the presence of a celebrity in their midst. A few actually came over to say “hi” to him, just as they kept chorusing “Mr Ibu! Mr Ibu!, Mr. Ibu!”.

Okafor, who was wearing a net-like top, ash-coloured jeans and a fez cap to match, never for once ignored any voice as he kept looking their way and waving in appreciation.

Click for Full Size

Everywhere the now rested soap opera, Behind The clouds was aired on the network service of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Nigerians will never forget Franca Obianuju Brown, who played the role of Mama Nosa. Unlike what most people thought that she began her acting career with Behind the Clouds, the ageless actress revealed to Klieglights that she had featured in another Soap prior to Behind the Clouds.

"I did not start my acting career with Behind the Clouds. I started with Behind the Bukka an NTA Jos production. It was actually my stepping stone to playing the role I got in Behind the Clouds. In the earlier soap I acted as Ngozi a police officer's wife and I was the one giving my husband trouble in the house. I wanted him to do anything to get money so I could look good," she said.

The former banker, whose stay in the industry is older than many imagine speaks on her acting career and the wifely role she normally plays.

'I'm the Ronaldo of Nollywood'...........Saint Obi'I'm the Ronaldo of Nollywood'...........Saint Obi

One thing that Saint Obi Nwafor, an A-list Nollywood actor has going for him is his undeniable good looks. In fact, in the Nigerian movie industry today, he is known as one of the most handsome studs in the business. Little wonder in time past, he was like the proverbial golden fish which has no hiding place - as everything about him became juicy gossip.

While his surname Nwafor wouldn't ring any bell among his teeming fans, the name, Saint Obi, does. At a time when he was still single and appeared not ready to settle down, he was regarded not only as a gay, some people even rumoured that he was impotent. All these rumours withered away last December, as this Nigerian-born action hero announced to everyone upon a return from the United States of America (USA) that he has finally found his missing rib. The announcement sure shattered the hearts of a few women. A few months after this, he again announced the birth of his son in the state of Texas, USA.

But do not expect to hear Nwafor, who is popularly known as Saint Obi, talk publicly about his wife, Linda. This, he said, is because he hopes to shield her from “unneccessary publicity and make her enjoy her marital life not as a celebrity's wife with the attendant exposure to media scrutiny.”

Nollywood is more popular Abroad - Sonny Mcdon
Nollywood is more popular Abroad - Sonny Mcdon

To track down Sonny Mcdon for an interview was not particularly easy The reason is that Mcdon is almost everywhere working for Nollywood and projecting culture and entertainment. He was, in fact, among those who midwifed Nollywood in the early 1990's. After 20 years on screen, he veered into film production and directing. He is at present the executive secretary, Actors Guild of Nigeria; the programme director, African Movie Academy; programme director, Abuja International Film Festival and Chief Executive of Port Harcourt International Film and Cultural Festival. On Saturday, October 4, 2008, The Source ran into him at the Protean Hotel, Maryland, at an event where the Screen Writers Guild of Nigeria held a week -long activity on writing for Good Pictures sponsored by the United States of America (USA's) Department of State. The following discussion is the result of that chance meeting. Enjoy it.

“PMAN, not ready for true change”........Orits Wiliki

Pupa Orits Wiliki, popular Reggae musician and one-time second Vice President, Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN)

Since 1989 when Pupa Oritz Wiliki's first album, Ten Commandments hit the market, many contend that there has never been a dull moment in his career, as he has not only released seven other successful follow-up works, but has also worked his way into being one of Nigeria's most visible reggae artistes.

But Wiliki was to for about four years disappear from the musical stage, only to reappear a few weeks ago with two albums, a gospel song and his usual contemporary Reggea-songs. In a chat with Wiliki which took place at his Surulere, Lagos studio on Independence day, he poured his heart out to The Source regarding why it took him that long to release his works.

I grew up in violence.............Daddy Showkey
I grew up in violence.............Daddy Showkey

Popular Nigerian musician and creator of Galala dance steps, John Odafe Asiemo a.k.a Daddy Showkey

Jamansthami is one of the many annual festivals celebrated by the Indians. This year's celebration did not pass by without members of the Indian community living in Lagos calling on friends and well-wishers to rejoice with them in one of their temples located in the Apapa area of the Lagos metropolis.

One of their very special guests this year turned out to be popular Ajegunle musician, John Odafe Asiemo, otherwise known as Daddy showkey, whose presence added more glamour to the event. The Source nevertheless, feasted on the opportunity to have a chat with the Galala cronner.

Finding Daddy Showkey in his Ojodu abode where he is currently building his all marble manison was not too difficult as virtually all the commercial motorcycle riders operating within that vicinity were conversant with it. With just N100 and a 20-minute ride on bumpy roads, The Source arrived to meet Showkey relaxed behind a parked Chereokee jeep outside the uncompleted building.
